The controversy surrounding the
new minimum wage may soon be a thing of the past, as President Muhammadu Buhari
is billed to transmit a bill to the National Assembly to back it up on January
23.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige at the resumed meeting with organised labour on Tuesday. The issue of the minimum wage has been a knotty one, pitching organised labour against government, over the latter’s seeming foot dragging on the implementation of the new national minimum wage. In apparent displeasure over the delay, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and other labour unions in the country called out their members for a protest rally across the country today, Tuesday.
Though the Federal Government had made a tacit approval to the N30,000, organised labour is insisting on governors towing the same line. But the 36 states chief executives, under the aegis of Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, have insisted they cannot pay N30,000, proposing N22,500, which labour has flatly rejected.
